Rourkela- The Commercial Capital of Odisha

The name Rourkela means ‘Our Village’. Rourkela is a well-known industrial township in the Indian state of Odisha. It is the 3^rd largest city in the state. Rourkela is known for housing the Steel Authority of India (SAIL), the largest steel plant in India. The city serves as a hub for the extraction of iron ore.

Rourkela is one of the oldest cities in the state. It has natural heritage and vast culture. The city was declared as an urban town in 1931. The steel plant was established in the city in 1955. A well-established German organization took the initiative in 1952 to establish the steel factory in the city. Government of Odisha accepted this proposal and due to that decision thousands of people lost their homes and migrated.

Located at an elevation of 219 meters, the city of Rourkela is located at 22.2604° north latitude and 84.8536° east longitude. The area of the city is about 200 km². Laterite and red soil are found here which is rich in mineral.

Rourkela has tropical climate. It remains humid for most of the months. Maximum temperature reaches up to 45^o centigrade. Average annual precipitation is 1448 mm. May is the hottest month whereas July is the wettest month in this region.

Major part of Rourkela’s economy is dependent on the Rourkela Steel Plant. Besides that, forest products (timber, herbs etc.) also contribute to the economy of the city.

Rourkela junction is the main railway station that connects the city to Bhubaneshwar, Cuttak, Sambalpur and Puri directly.  The nearest airport is Birsa Munda Airport, which is in Ranchi.
