Introduction of the City
Thrissur is a very famous city located in the center of Kerala. The city is also called ‘Cultural Capital of Kerala’. It is built on the same hillock where Vadakkunnathan Temple is situated. Thrissur is often referred to as ‘The Pooram City’ because of the famous Pooram festival celebrated here. The architectural design of Thrissur is worth special mentioning as it was envisioned by Sakthan Thampuran who was the erstwhile ruler of Cochin.
Actually, Thrissur is built around a vast open space called ‘Thekkinkadu maidanam’ surrounding the Vadakkunnathan temple. Around the maidanam lies the ‘Swaraj Round’. It is a circular ring road with many radial roads starting from it.

History of Thrissur
History of Thrissur is connected with the Cheras of Sangam age. Cheras ruled over Kerala and made Vanchi Muthur their capital. From 9th to 12th century, the Kulasekharas of Kandanad took over the rule. From the 12th century onwards, Perumpadappu Swarupam ruled over the region. He had his headquarters at Kadanand (Mahodayapuram). Central Kerala was under the control of Perumpadappu Moopil. He was famous as “Kerala Chakravarthi”. In 14th and 15th centuries, the Samoothiri of Kozhikode managed to occupy a large part of Thrissur.
An old harbor named Kondugalloor attracted Europeans towards Prosperous Kerala for trading commodities like spices, coconuts, and fruits. In the 15th century, the Portuguese came here and invaded a large area. But during the 17th century, English and Dutch appeared and challenged the Portuguese with their huge armies. An internal conflict took place and Dutch managed to get their control over Perumpadappu Swarupam and establish their control at Kerala coast.
Haider Ali and Tipu sultan ruled over the northern part of Kerala during the 17th century. Thrissur’s modern history started with the swearing ceremony of Rama Varma Kunhjipilla Thampuran in 1790. He was also known as Sakthan Thampuran that means powerful king Thampuran. The mighty ruler Rama Varma Kunhjipilla Thampuran is legendary as the architect of Thrissur.
Geographical Location of Thrissur
Thrissur is situated in Central Kerala. The city is located at 10.52°N latitude and 76.21°E longitude. The average elevation is 2.83 meters mean sea level. The city is 133 kilometers southwest of Coimbatore, 75 kilometers north-east of Kochi, and 144 kilometers southeast of Kozhikode. Thrissur is located in midlands of Kerala. The city geographically is composed of crystalline schists and Archaean gneisses. The main rivers flowing in the district are the Chalakudy, the Periyar, the Kurumali River, the Ponnani (Bharatha Puzha) and the Karuvannur.

The maximum temperature of the Thrissur in the summer season is 35oC while the minimum temperature is 22.5o Celsius. The winter season records an average temperature of 26o C. Monsoon receives heavy rainfall. The average precipitation recorded in Thrissur is 3500 mm. The city experiences the season of monsoon from June and remains until September. July is the wettest month.
