About Bhavnagar
Bhavnagar lies in the Saurashtra region of the Indian state of Gujarat. It is the administrative headquarters of the Bhavnagar district. Bhavnagar is the fifth largest district in Gujarat. The city is only 198 Kilometers away from the state capital- Gandhinagar. Bhavnagar is considered as a holy city for Jains as there are several Jain temples situated in the city.
History
Gohil Rajputs native of Rajasthan countered severe opposition in Marwar and moved to the coast of Gujarat establishing Ranpur, Sihor, and Umrala as their bases in 1260. In 1722 Sihor faced several attacks from the armies of Pilaji Gaekwad and Khanthaji Kadani. These battles forced Bhavsinhji Gohil to shift his capital from Sihor to Vadva which was renamed as Bhavnagar. Bhavnagar, after this, became a major economic hub due to its high involvement in the maritime trade. The city enjoyed the status of British protectorate from 1807 till 1947. After 1947 it became part of the Indian union on the insistence of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Geography
The city is located on the eastern coast of Saurashtra region, which is referred to as Kathiawar. To the northeast of the city is Gulf of Khambhat. Kanasara Nala is a non perennial river that passes through the outskirts of the city.
Climate
The city has a hot and semi- arid climate. March to June is hot and dry., monsoon reaches the city and lasts from June till October. In the months from November to February there is low humidity and the temperature averages around 20 degree Celsius. Bhavnagar lies in seismic zone 3 and was the epicenter of the earthquakes that shook the state of Gujarat in 2002.

As per 2011 census, Bhavnagar’s population is 593,768, with an average literacy rate of more than 86 percent. Hinduism is the religion of the masses in the city and people of other faiths and religion constitute a negligible minority in the region. Pilgrims from all parts of the country and the world come to these temples during the festive season. The special cuisine that is enjoyed by the people of the region includes Khakhra, Thepla, Bajra na Rotla, Khandvi, Dhokla, Sev Khamani, Cholafali, Muthia, Fafda, Sev Tameta nu Shaak, Sutarfeni, Khichu, Kansar, Sukhdi, Somaras, and Mohan Thal.
Economy
The economy of the city and the district as a whole is vast and vibrant. The city produces/ manufactures a good amount of cotton, ship, machinery, onions, diamond jewellry, twine, plastic rope, yarn, investment castings, soda-ash, fertilizers, bajra, guavas, and groundnuts. Most of this output is exported due to its fine quality. Besides being a center of maritime trade in western India, the city also has the largest ship breaking yard at Alang.
