Kakinada is a city and municipal corporation in East Godavari in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is located 465 kilometers east of Hyderabad. The city is the headquarters of East Godavari district. Kakinada is nicknamed ‘Fertilizer City’, ‘Second Madras’ and ‘Pensioner’s Paradise’. It is the 6th largest city in the state.
Initially, the name of Kakinada city used to be ‘Kakanandivada’ during the time of Nandi kings before the arrival of the Europeans. The name was later changed to Cocanada and Coninga in the British era. After Independence, it was again renamed as Kakinada.
Kakinada is located at 16.9891° North latitude and 82.2475° East longitude. Average elevation is 6 feet (2 meters). Kakinada is a natural harbor. Most of the areas of the city is below sea level.
The climate of Kakinada is tropical savanna type. The weather remains hot and humid throughout the year. Summer months starts from March and ends in June. Average annual precipitation is 1150 mm. Kakinada has frequent storms due to the Bay of Bengal.
