Jammu: The City of mountains

Jammu is an administrative division of Jammu & Kashmir that consists of several districts like Udhampur, Kathua, Doda, Jammu, Reasi, Poonch, Samba, Ramban, and Rajouri. Most of the land in the city is hilly with vast mountain ranges. Jammu also includes the Pir Panjal range. This range separates Kashmir Valley and Jammu city. The city is also known as Jammu-Tawi.

Jammu was founded in 14th century BC by Raja Jambulochan. Jambulochan was the brother of Raja Bahulochan who built Fort Bahu on the banks of River Tawi. He named it as Jambupora. Later the city name was changed to Jambu-Nagar, which then changed to Jammu. Historically, Jammu has been the capital of the state of Jammu & Kashmir from 1846 to 1952.

Jammu is surrounded by Trikuta Range in the northwest and by the Shivalik range to the east, north and southeast. The geo coordinates of Jammu is 32.72° north latitude and 74.85° east longitude. River Tawi flows through the entire district.

Jammu has great diversity in its temperature and precipitation. It has a subtropical climate, the average temperature during summer is about 29o C. The city witnesses monsoon between the months of July and September. The entire valley is surrounded by thick fog during monsoon. During winters the temperature dips down to less than 4o C.

Jammu is famous for beautiful temples all around the city, while Kashmir is known for its gardens and lakes. Jammu has agro-climatic conditions best suited for floriculture and horticulture. Horticulture is the backbone of the rural economy, providing employment to a large number of inhabitants.
