Belgaum is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is officially known as Belagavi.  The city is also recognized as the ‘Sugar Bowl of Karnataka’ because of the massive sugarcane cultivation and production conveniences. Belgaum was ruled by the Chalukyas, the Satavahanas followed by the Rashtrakutas. However, it was under the rule of Rattas and the Kadambas in the 12^th century that the city attained its preeminence.

Belgaum is situated near the foothills of Sahyadri mountain range in the Western Ghats. Rivers like Krishna, Markandeya, Vedaganga Hiranyakeshi, Malaprabha, Ghataprabha, Mahadai, and Doodhaganga flow across the district.
