Barmer is a desert town located in Rajasthan. It is 153 km from Jaisalmer. The district is a part of the Great Indian Desert aka the Thar Desert. Though it is a barren land with harsh climatic conditions and tough terrain, Barmer is identified for its rich crafts, dance and folk music.

In earlier times, the city was known by the name ‘Mallinath’. In the 18^th century, Britishers adopted the name, Balmer. The name ‘Barmer’ is derived from Bahada Rao Parmar who was the ruler of the region in the earlier 13th century. It was named ‘Bahadamer’ by him and later renamed as Barmer.

Barmer is located in the western part of Rajasthan. The geographic coordinates of the city are 25.7532° north latitude and 71.4181° East longitude. The district borders Jaisalmer in the north, Jalore in the south, Jodhpur and Pali in the east and Pakistan in the west.

Barmer has semi-arid desert climate. The area receives virtually no rainfall during the year. The average annual temperature of Barmer is 28^oC and the average annual precipitation is 295mm.

The Ministry of Panchayat Raj named the district of Barmer one of the 250 most backward districts in India in 2016. It is among the 12 districts in Rajasthan currently receiving economic support from BRGF (Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme).
